What does Achacachi mean?

Jach’a k’achi. Big point. Achacachi means “Big point”, this name derives of the aymará language: “jach'a”, ‘big’ and “k'achi”, ‘point’.

Jachac jachi. Weeping people. There is another version about the origin of the word Achacachi. After the failed conquest invasion against the umasuyus, the Inca decided to make a pact. And to seal the pact the Inca gave in marriage a ñusta (virgin maiden that served in the temple of the Sun Island to the god Inti) to Zapana , the umasuyus’ leader.

So much would miss the ñusta for that she didn't stop of crying, so that, the place where they lived was called 'place where jachac jachi', that is to say place where the ‘whiners’ inhabit, since “jachac jachi” in aymará mean-literally- the whiner.

Other names of Achacachi After de Spanish conquest, Achacachi was known as “Villa Lealtad de Caceres”, due to first landlord.
